Y2K
Contrary to what people think, Y2K compliance does not only apply to the year 2000. What it means is that the product should be unaffected by the date in the computer it runs on. Over the years a number of software developers have used different dates as codes to mean different things, for instance reset the memory etc. More recently operating systems have started to use four digits for the year and the problem of transition from 1999 to 2000 has been resolved. However there may still be inherent date problems, due to the date format used and the time zone where the product is installed. This is tested before releasing all our products.
Before installation, date tests are carried out at our production premises to make sure the communications, user interfaces and processing of our products are not affected by Y2K related problems. We believe these tests are paramount because pipelines have a life span of many decades and our leak detection systems are expected to perform well into this century. We also advise the customers about their own systems (e.g. SCADAs) should doubts arise about their Y2K compliance.
